Average grain size measurements are routinely performed at UDRI. While all of the procedures outlined in ASTM E112 are utilized, the intercept method is the preferred procedure. These test methods are applied to metallic and non-metallic materials with similar, single-phase structures of unimodal distribution. Two-dimensional grain sections revealed by sectional planning are used to determine planar grain size.
