Hard Chrome Alternative Coatings
The Structures and Materials Evaluation group at Wright-Patterson AFB is currently involved in evaluating the physical and mechanical property characteristics of hard chrome alternative coatings, which include High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) technologies, Electro-Spark Deposition (ESD), and cold spray coating technologies. In these efforts we have concentrated on developing data relative to the intended end product. For example, HVOF coatings are intended to replace chrome in landing gear and actuator applications. Thus the information developed on these materials include fatigue, wear, and corrosion-related properties. Data developed thus far has addressed US Air Force concerns of coating integrity under cyclic loading, as well as corrosion sensitivity.
