Experience:

Since joining the Research Institute in 1988, Dr. Braisted has specialized in structural design, analysis, and testing of advanced aerospace materials and structures. He has designed and analyzed aircraft structures for numerous aircraft including the A-10, AV-8B, B-1B, F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22, S-3, T-38, and V-22 aircraft. These design programs have included parametric design studies, detailed finite element analysis, fabrication of prototype hardware, full-scale qualification testing, and transition to flight certified hardware. 

Dr. Braisted has served as principal investigator on numerous large- and small-scale research and development efforts, including:

  • Development of a complete structural finite element model of an A-10 aircraft wing and validation of that model with full-scale testing.
  • Implementation of simulation-based research and development initiatives to improve the assessment methods for new aircraft technologies and air vehicle concepts. 
  • Design, test, and transition of damping technologies to mitigate vibratory stress problems in aircraft and weapon systems. 
  • Development of analytical techniques to predict the residual stress field from various surface enhancement technologies.
