Experimental Fabrication and Machining

An overview of the UDRI machine shop.

Three full-time machinists are available to support the fabrication and machining needs of sponsored research projects at UDRI. These machinists work in fully equipped facilities where special jigs, fixtures, apparatus, and complex material shapes can be fabricated.

The shop’s staff members each have between 20 and 40 years experience. Our machinists pride themselves on their craftsmanship and versatility. Their skills and experience make them capable of working from instructions that can range from detailed drawings to vague sketches or verbal descriptions.

The machinists have at their disposal the lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and welding, grinding, and sanding equipment required to meet almost any fabrication need. Also available are benches for assembly and final fitting of complex pieces of mechanical assemblies requiring precise interaction of individual parts, plus extensive layout, gauging and inspection equipment. A precision mechanical measurements laboratory, a sheet metal fabrication area, a welding booth, and a paint booth supplement this equipment.
