Electroless Zinc Plating for Corrosion Protection of Steel Surface (302)

A novel method to plate metallic zinc onto ferrous steel at room temperature from a water-based solution has been developed. This process employs a chemical approach to deposit an adherent zinc film onto a steel surface in-situ without the need of a plating bath, a pickling solution, or a dip tank. This process is suited to field application and can be tailored to limit the formation of white rust. Other post-assembly zinc application methods for steel are not amenable to effective conversion coating and can alter the electronic signature of the work piece.
