Biomechanics and Biomaterials

Since 1968 the Advanced Ceramics and Glasses group has been active in working with the medical community to develop techniques to determine the mechanical characteristics of tendons, ligaments, intervertebral bodies, and bone. Our group was the first to publish the results of implanting biodegradable ceramic implants in rhesus monkeys. We were also the first to develop a resorbable glass fiber composition that could be safely implanted in humans.
