| The Integrated Methods Materials Characterization - Applied Research (IMMC-AR) group specializes in test development and materials characterization using both mechanical and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques. Properties and behavior of advanced materials can be determined through tests such as creep, fracture, fatigue, thermal-mechanical, and high-temperature testing (up to 1500°C) conducted under customized conditions and environments. Damage to materials can be detected, characterized, and monitored through NDE by ultrasonic, eddy current, thermal, acoustic emission, optical, thermal-elastic and other techniques. The IMMC-AR group also conducts rigorous NDE reliability assessments to establish capabilities of inspection equipment to detect in-service defects. Application areas include testing of metals/alloys, ceramics, and composites (polymer, ceramic, and metal matrix), and inspection for different forms of damage including processing defects, cracking, and hidden corrosion. |
