Dr. Ballal is Head of the Energy and Environmental Engineering division, which was formed in 2003. As division head, Dr. Ballal has the overall responsibility for direction and successful completion of basic and applied research in areas of fuel science, fuels engineering, combustion, environmental engineering, modeling and simulation, and energy conservation. He joined the university in April 1983 as the leader of Fuels and Combustion group in the Research Institute. He has over 35 years of research experience covering academia and industry.
Dr. Ballal is also the Hans von Ohain Distinguished Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Director of the von Ohain Fuels and Combustion Center at the University of Dayton. He teaches graduate-level courses and supervises doctoral students in gas turbine combustion, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, aviation fuels, and instrumentation. Dilip has authored or coauthored over 100 papers and received numerous AIAA and ASME awards. Currently, Dr. Ballal is Chairman, Board of Directors of ASME International Gas Turbine Institute. In the past, he served as a member of the Board of the International Combustion Institute (Central States Section), and a member of NASA Combustion R&D Committee.
