The Power Components group develops electrical components and systems for aircraft power applications. Electrical component R&D efforts include development of improved capacitors and stable contacts to silicon carbide for high-temperature electronic devices for aircraft flight controls and computer-controlled jet engines. The group researches the use of advanced magnetic materials to overcome design limitations for generators, motors, and actuators. Another research area is high-temperature superconductors for advanced power systems. Thermal management research addresses the use of spray cooling, jet impingement and boiling heat transfer, heat pipes, and vibration heat transfer for aircraft thermal control.
